Shelter Dogs in 2026: What the Mid-Year Numbers Say
Share
October 2026. Shelter Animals Count, the national database that tracks US shelter data, released its 2026 mid-year summary. Here are the dog numbers, as reported by Vet Advantage.
The headline numbers
- About 1.06 million dog adoptions in the first half of 2026, up roughly 0.7% from 2025 but about 6.3% below 2016.
- Dog intake was nearly flat compared with last year, so shelters are not getting much relief.
- About 236,000 dogs in shelter care are adults, roughly 66% of dogs waiting. Puppies aren't the problem; adult dogs are the ones staying longest.
Why adult dogs are worth a look
- What you see is what you get: size, energy level and personality are already known.
- Many are already house-trained and used to a leash.
- Shelter staff can often tell you how a dog handles car rides, other dogs and kids.
Ways to help, even if you can't adopt
- Foster. Even a weekend foster gives a dog a break from the kennel and gives the shelter information for adopters.
- Offer to drive. Many rescues need volunteer drivers for vet runs and transports, a perfect job for road-trip people.
- Donate what's on the wish list. Shelters publish lists; blankets, leashes and food are common needs.
- Share adoptable dogs. A post can be how a dog finds its person.
